Month In Review - May 2017

Another month has come and gone! This is one of my favorite months because it's Lukey's birthday and his 8 year anniversary of brain surgery (he's 100% healthy!) and it's the last month of teaching until August! Running this month was a bit of a struggle. I'm not a huge spring runner and I honestly think that the end of the year is catching up with me. It's like I don't realize how tired my body is until I'm running ;) I've managed to keep a decent pace but my overall effort feels higher. I'm just trying to keep my eyes on summer! I coach xc so we'll do some easy runs to get my peeps in shape or back in shape for fall and honestly, it's super fun and pretty chill which is exactly what I think I need right now! I have my RRCA course this weekend and I am super pumped about being able to write a 1/2 marathon training plan for the hubs and I for our race in August.

Some goals from May:
1. Get my gut under control.
2. Cut back on coffee.
3. Cut out white sugar.
4. Cut back on gluten.
5. Add fruits and veggies.
6. Check out intermittent fasting.
7. Continue collagen and ACV.
8. Continue my run streak.
9. Add in more strength.
10. Run more with friends.

Checking in and new goals:
1. My stomach is definitely doing better :) I think it's part of continuing the ACV and collagen. I need to get some small packets of collagen to take with me this summer!
2. I am about 50/50 on this one. I feel like getting up early and working out gives me more energy, but coffee helps even more with this one. I sort of naturally lay off coffee (at least hot coffee) over the summer because it's just too darn hot!
3. I have pretty much cut out white sugar, which again helps with my stomach. I've reached the conclusion that white sugar is basically a drug and highly addictive for me and I truly have an issue doing things in moderation so until I can work on that more, it's out of my diet.
4. I have figured out that a little bit of gluten in a whole wheat form earlier in the day is okay; otherwise, I am extremely bloated and it hurts my stomach, especially when running!
5. This one is fairly easy for me because I love fruits and veggies. What I probably need to work on is adding healthy fats :)
6. Okay, so I've been trying to eat during 8 hours of the day and fasting for 16. I'm not super strict with it and if I'm super hungry, then I eat. I'm not sure how much of a difference I have noticed other than being less hungry by the time lunch and dinner roll around. That seems counter-intuitive but I'll take it.
7. Collagen and ACV are going great!
8. Today is day 74 of my run streak.
9. I have definitely added in more strength training especially because the hubs and I are working out at a boot camp 3 x's per week and it's super fun.
10. I'm running about 2-3 x's per week with friends (and fast ones!)

New Goals;
1. Continue healthy eating.
2. More intuitive eating.
3. Continue run streak.
4. Continue strength training and come up with a plan for summer vacation.
5. Get min. 8 hours sleep each night.

What are some of your June goals?

Week In Running

Monday: 2 miles on the treadmill + strength
Tuesday: 3 miles on the treadmill + strength
Wednesday: 4.5 miles of hills
Thursday: 4 miles on the treadmill
Friday: 1 mile warm up + 1 hr of boot camp
Saturday: 8 miles of hilly trails + getting a little lost when I stopped to use the bathroom. Haha, good time!
Sunday: 7 miles of more hills

Whew! Lots of hills this week. I'm feeling a bit stronger and my stomach is definitely doing better since watching my sugar and gluten intake. I'm not allergic to either, I just swell with gluten and my stomach pretty much hates sugar. I'm still eating fruit, just trying to cut out white sugar.

Happy Running Y'all!

Eyebrows & Birthdays

So, I got my eye brows microbladed last week. She warned me that she was going to make them about 40% larger than what we want them to be and they were going to be darker because once they peel and heal, they shrink about 40% and get much lighter. But oy, do I feel like I have two giant catepillars on my forehead right now!
This was taken on Friday (and yes I had to go to work like this!) Ha, they are looking much more normal today after some peeling! Whew!

Saturday was birthday parties for Lukey (he's 10!! How did that happen), my BIL, and my cousin! They have birthdays on 5/26, 5/27, and 5/28. As a matter of fact, 10 years ago, we were going to have a bbq for my BIL but I missed it because I was having a baby!

Sunday and Monday was mostly helping my mama clean up the cabin, but we also made sure to play lots of card games, we did lots of swinging, and some running :)

We were definitely pooped out!

We took Lukey to dinner and shopping for his birthday. He wanted a bacon cheeseburger and an Oreo McFlurry from McDonald's. I didn't even realize that he liked McDonald's. Haha. Then we hit up Target and he got some Legos and a video game. I really love this new tradition and we will definitely continue this with the other kiddos!

Catching Up!

It must be the end of the school year or something because I feel a little bit like a chicken without a head, but in a good way because school is out in a week!! And I only have one more full schedule day :)

Last weekend the boy had his buddies over for his 10th bday celebration. His actual bday is this Sunday but we figured people might be out of town for Memorial Day. We had a Rubik's Cube party and the hubs printed out instructions and taught 10 year old boys how to solve a Rubik's Cube. He's a saint.
And of course he had to have sprinkle Kodiak cakes :)

After the boys left, the hubs and I got in a hot and sweaty 4 mile run.
This was followed by pool time and date night!

We had the family over for a bbq on Sunday. We have family dinner about 90% of the time on Sundays and it is one of my favorite traditions! We bought some pool rings to float around in...

Sunday morning's run was rough. 8 mi @ 8:13, but I felt so sluggish. I'm thinking maybe it was laying out by the pool and the increase in temp. It was about 65 when we started and close to 75 when we finished. Ah!  I'm not quite ready for summer running, or at least summer temps!

Monday's run was 2 miles on the treadmill and strength training.

Tuesday was 3 miles on the treadmill and strength training.

Wednesday was 4.5 miles of hills.

Thursday was 4 miles on the treadmill and abs. Are you seeing a trend here? The hubs' quad is still sore so since I run so stinking early, I prefer to either run with him or on the 'mill. Plus on Thursday, we drove down south to get my eyebrows microbladed and we had to leave at 6am, so the treadmill at 4am it was! Here's sort of a before (with numbing cream).
And here's sort of an after ;) I need to go back in 4-6 weeks for my touch up, especially on my right brow. She had to create a nice little patch of hair so she had to enlarge the space because it shrinks up so they don't match perfectly yet. She also said that they will be super dark for about 5 days or so.

And just one pic of my eats for this week! I've been craving stone fruit salad, so this is spinach with mango, plum, strawberries, goat cheese, and a bit of Bolthouse Farms yogurt ranch. It was amazing!

Friday's workout was a 1 mile warmup followed by an hour of boot camp at a local gym. My arms feel like they are going to fall off... I'll keep you posted on that :) My goal is to lean up a bit and really work on cutting back on the sugar! The hubs is all in so I feel really good about trying to feel really good :) Happy Weekend!!

Do you enjoy group classes or prefer to workout by yourself?

Mother's Day Weekend + Weekly Running Review

We helped my sis and mom in law move this weekend. We finished Friday night off with some froyo! I'm so glad the kids are old enough that we can steal away for an hour or so to squeeze in a quick date night.

We ran Saturday morning with a few of our running friends and then we headed back to help move but thankfully it was pretty well organized and we were done in time to go and see Guardians of the Galaxy with my mom, sis, and brother in law. We loved it! We rushed home to clean & have cereal for dinner. I can't ever eat a regular dinner after a movie because I consume too much popcorn! I don't usually drink soda or have candy for that matter (I prefer ice cream) but when it comes to the movies, there is nothing better than warm salty popcorn with Hot Tamales in it and a big cherry Diet Coke! The movie was pretty good and it actually held my attention, which kind of says a lot because I tend to doze off during movies 😏

Sunday morning the hubs drove us to a bike path and we ran 5 miles. We saw tons of animals! A roadrunner, tons of baby bunnies, and all different kinds of birds. It was all good until a rat ran across our path!

Then the hubs took me to breakfast and we headed home to prep for our families coming over. We decided to have tacos catered this year and that was a major win, not to mention that we've had leftovers for a few days now too! The hubs also make me a scratch carrot cake. He uses my aunt's recipe and it is just the best ever.

Monday was back to real life with students, parents, and teachers who are pretty much over school at this point. Haha, I don't blame them! I am definitely on countdown until summer!

Running Review:
Monday: 1.2 miles slow :) I was just trying to keep the streak alive because my foot was super duper sore from rolling it! I also ran after going out for Mexican food with the girlfriends to celebrate a bday. Whew, that was interesting.
Tuesday: 1 mile (same) + 30 min of strength/HIIT
Wednesday: 4 miles @ 8:30/mi. - The foot was finally feeling better
Thursday: 3.7 miles @ 8:38/mi with a friend on the bike path. It was super fun to run somewhere new and with a friend that I haven't ran with in over a year.
Friday: 5.1 mi @ 8:27/mi with my friend/co-xc coach :)
Saturday: 4.6 mi of hills @ 8:22/mi with friends.
Sunday: 5.1 mi @ 8:35/mi on the bike path with my hunny. He's still recovering from a quad strain that he got from running sprints with our kids.

Total: 24.7 and a 57 day running streak.

I'm thinking it will be a few more miles this week, especially because my foot is finally feeling good!

Banana Cake with Browned Butter Frosting

Ingredients
BANANA BREAD CAKE
1 1/2 c sugar (or 3/4 cup of stevia)
1 c plain Greek yogurt
2 eggs
1/2 c butter, softened
4 mashed, ripe bananas
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 c all purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 c chopped walnuts
BROWN BUTTER FROSTING
1/2 c butter
3 3/4 c powdered sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
3 Tbsp milk
Directions
1. Heat oven to 375F. Grease a 9X13 cake pan. Mix the first 4 ingredients until creamy. Blend in bananas and vanilla extract for 1 minute. Add dry ingredients and blend for 1 minute. Stir in walnuts.
2. Spread batter evenly into pan. Bake 25 to 30 minutes. I have a convection oven, and 25 min was definitely enough.
3. Once the cake is done, let it cool for about 10 minutes. Then for the frosting, heat butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until boiling. Let the butter turn a delicate brown and remove from heat immediately.
4. Add powdered sugar, vanilla extract and milk. Whisk together until smooth (it should be thicker than a glaze but thinner than frosting). Using a spatula, spread the brown butter frosting over the warm cake. The frosting is easier to spread when the cake is still warm.

Enjoy!!

Weekend Happenings

The hubs had a student team competing in San Diego so we drove down there Friday afternoon. Ugh. 6 hours for a 3 1/2 hour trip. That's fun 😝 But we discovered that our fav pizza place has a location right next to our hotel!! Yay! If you're ever in SD you must try Filippi's Pizza Grotto! We got the ham & pineapple and added jalapenos.
And of course we stayed up way too late watching the breaking 2 attempt!

So exciting!!

It made my workout just a little easier the next day thinking about how fast they ran! I love when hotels have nice gyms :) I was in there all by myself and I was able to work out as long as I wanted!

I was on my own for most of Saturday, so I got my nails done (yay!), hit up Chick Fil A for a super food side salad (delish!)

And of course, what would a road trip be without In N Out?

It only took us 3 1/2 hours to get home! But by then it was almost midnight, so sleeping in the next morning was mandatory! I did manage to bake a banana with browned butter icing cake (amaze balls!!)

I was planning on an easy 3-4 mile run just to keep the streak alive (day 50) but I felt pretty good as I set out, so I decided on between 5-6. I stopped at the park to get water and I stepped on a small bottle just wrong and rolled my ankle. I walked a bit on it and it wasn't too bad so I continued my run and finished at 6 miles at a sub 8 average (yay!)

I wrote about some of my favs on Friday and Sunday turned out to be a no-makeup day (finally) and I wasn't totally self conscious!

We finished out the night with family dinner, some living room dancing, and a 1 mile walk.

Friday Favs

Happy Friday!!

1. Well, my number one fav right now is running with other people! It's been a bit of a rough go after a tough race and a dumb blister (under my callus?!). Wednesday, we ran with our training buddy and this morning I ran with my co-coach. I also texted a former neighbor that I used to run with and we are meeting up next week! Yay!

A few pics from this morning:

2.  My new running light! I've only used it once but it fit well and it didn't bounce at all. I'd call that a win :) I don't need a light quite as much now that it is lighter and I'll be able to run later soon, but I definitely need one for marathon training in the fall!

3. This Clarisonic Mia Fit. My face has been going nuts, so I decided I needed to try and more hypoallergic face wash and my bff suggested the Clarisonic. I chose the Mia because it's super compact and should be easy to travel with this summer. I had previously bought a different brand and my bff said that I need to make sure to get one that vibrates rather than spins, because the spinning motion can give you wrinkles. Um, no thanks! So far it's great and I like that it's waterproof so I can use it in the shower.

4. Philosophy Clear Days Ahead facial cleanser. I started using this last Saturday 4/29 and within 3 days I could tell a difference. My only complaint, and honestly this is true with ALL acne face wash, is that it dries my skin out like crazy! However, this takes me to my #5!

5. Clinique Face Scrub. Yes, this is a man's facial scrub; however, I swear by it! A few years ago, I was on Accutane and this was the only thing that saved my skin! Right now, I'm using it about every other day because my skin is so dry, especially around my mouth and nose.

Happy Friday y'all!

Race Update

To say that things did not go as planned would simply be an understatement. The first three miles went great. Then I thought I felt something in my shoe at the end of mile 3 so I stopped, pulled off my shoe and nothing was there. I figured out pretty quickly that I had a blister that ran along the bottom of my big toe as well as the padding on my foot and in between my big toe and my 2nd toe. Ugh. I pushed through for the first half of the race but by mile 8, I decided the only person I was racing against was myself and I was in pain. I'm still not over the chest congestion and that definitely played into it as well.
My cadence was off from normal too. I am almost always right at 180 and my average was 170 for the race. I wonder if it was the hills or just the fact that my foot hurt..? I wore stupid shoes. I haven't done a long run in them but they have been fine for mid-runs, so I thought why not? Haha. Yeah, because they gave me a huge blister. I should have stuck with the Boosts, but I've already worn them for a half marathon and I thought maybe they were wearing down, but honestly, there is so much cushion in those shoes that I don't know what exactly it would take to wear them down. Rookie mistake.

I knew the race would be tough, not just because of being sick, but because of the hills and the warm weather, but I still went into it with a time goal, which in retrospect wasn't a good idea. I wish that I would have gone into it just to have fun. The hubs finished about a minute behind me (he has a strained quad) and we should have just planned to run it together. Oh well. I'm glad I got that one behind me :)

A few good things about the race: my stomach didn't hurt, the course really was beautiful and dare I say a little fun with the rolling hills, the amount of people and course support was awesome, I walked away with 5 Kind bars and probably the same amount of Clif protein bars and Clif nut butter filled bars (I love these!), we got to stay the weekend with our friends who live about 20 minutes from the start line, and my body really isn't sore at all. I ran a 1 mile warm up this morning and then stretched and foam rolled for 20 minutes, which felt wonderful!

I am on day 44 of a run streak. I am pretty excited about that. I only ran a total of 26.5 miles last week and that's with the half marathon, due to being sick, but I made sure to get at least 1 mile in on those days.

So, for the next 4 months, my goals are to make sure that I am strength training at least 3 x's per week and signing up for some 5 and 10k's. I'm trying really hard not to get burnt out, which is especially hard after a bad race; however, I love running and I love the camaraderie it brings. I am also determined to get faster and BQ in my fall marathon. I am signed up for a race in August and it's right when I go back to work after having the summer off. And it's going to be crazy hot. My goal is to HAVE FUN. It will not be a timed goal, but simply a long run :) And I plan to run it with the hubs. The whole way. Just for fun.

What is the worst workout/run you've ever had?
Do you get burnt out by focusing too much on a single sport/activity?
What is your lunch today? I had a lettuce wrap with garlic hummus, and carrots and guacamole :)
